John Marston is a former outlaw and the main protagonist of "Red Dead Redemption," an action-shooter game set in the days of the Wild West. However, how removed John is from his former life of crime is completely up to the player. "Red Dead Redemption" features sandbox-style game play, which allows the player to be as heroic or as villainous as desired. Playing John with a wicked streak will not affect the main plot line, but it will send the posses and bounty hunters after you until you pay off your bounty, allow yourself to become arrested or are killed.
Attack and murder owned animals to raise your wanted level. Owned animals include horses, livestock and dogs.
Assault or murder a civilian using any weapon or technique.
Threaten, attack or kill a lawman such as a sheriff. Just the act of pulling out your gun and pointing it at a lawman will put a bounty on your head.
Vandalize, burn or destroy property, such as shooting out the windows of an establishment or firebombing a wagon.
Cheat at a game of poker and get caught doing so. Press the cheat button while playing a hand and you will have the possibility of getting caught.
Rob a citizen at gunpoint. Pull out your weapon and point it at them to threaten them and then press the corresponding button that appears on the screen to rob them. This also works on trains or in shops and establishments.
Steal a horse or a vehicle from a citizen or lawman. Press the mount button while near another person's vehicle to dismount him and take it for your own.
Break into a safe at a bank or establishment. Press the corresponding button near a safe and use the control stick to turn the dial. Turn the dial clockwise until you feel the controller vibrate, then turn it counter-clockwise and clockwise once more to open the safe.
Kidnap a citizen or lawman. Use the left trigger to bring out your lasso and the right trigger to throw it. Hold down the left trigger and come in closer to the victim. Press the action button to hogtie the victim and press it again to carry them. You can place them on a mount and carry them wherever you wish.
Tips & Warnings
- Performing these same actions against another outlaw or gang member will not increase the bounty on your head. You can attack, kill, kidnap and steal horses from criminals without repercussion.
- Purchase a bandanna from any general store to conceal your identity while you perform crimes. Open your satchel menu and select the bandanna to wear it when you commit a crime. After you have escaped from any lawmen, take off the bandanna and your wanted level will go away.
- To give yourself up to a lawman or posse, put your gun away and stand still. John will put his hands up after a few moments and you will have to watch a cutscene of John serving a jail sentence.
- The more crimes you commit, the bigger posses and the more bounty hunters that will come after you to bring you to justice.
