Tappahonnock, one of Virginia's earliest colonial-era settlements, sits along the Rappahannock River near Virginia's eastern border. The topography and natural beauty of the Tappahonnock's region, combined with the city's historical heritage, draw travelers who have their choice of area attractions to visit. Visitors will discover Tappahonnock's importance with visits to its cultural, historical and natural attractions.

Historic Sites

Set off on the Tappahannock Historic Town Walking Tour through the city's Landmark District. The 13 historic buildings, located within walking distance of each other, allow visitors to explore Tappahonnock's history from the 17th century through modern times. The walking tour includes the Scots Arms Tavern, Tappahannock's oldest house, The Old Debtor's Prison, which dates to at least 1769, and the Roane-Wright-Trible House, a Georgian mansion built around 1850.

River Cruise

Head down the Rappahannock River for a cruise that takes you to see the region's natural resources and gives you an overview of the area's history. The Tangier Cruise (tangiercruise.com) departs from Hoskins Creek at Tappahannock. The 18-mile cruise includes a narration of the river's sights and sounds. Cruise participants view resident and migratory bald eagles which nest along the river's banks and visit a local winery.

Physical Activities

Explore Tappahannock's options to enjoy fresh air and exercise. The June Parker Marina (essex-virginia.org) on Church Lane offers docking facilities for boaters. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries sells licenses for fishing, noting that the Route 360 bridge designates the boundary between freshwater and saltwater fishing, with different licenses needed for each. RivahFest

Join Tappahannock's annual RivahFest, which draws visitors to Tappahannock each June for a day of festivities and activities. RivahFest takes place on the third Saturday in June and includes a parade, a "RivahFest Idol" singing contest, inflatable jumping toys, an Iron Man Challenge obstacle course, crab races, face painting, sand art and a magic show. The RivahFest offers activities for all ages.
