Gone with the Wind crystallized Atlanta’s Southern heritage in the world’s imagination, but this cosmopolitan metropolis offers something Tara did not— the MARTA subway system. MARTA’s North-South line offers rail access to the city’s prominent destinations, including Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and the Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead districts. Hotel accommodations near the North-South line are in the heart of their respective neighborhoods near top attractions.

The Ellis Hotel

The Ellis Hotel offers boutique accommodations along the city’s most famous thoroughfare, Peachtree Street. The downtown Atlanta hotel is adjacent to the Peachtree Center MARTA station and within walking distance of family-friendly fun at Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola museum and vibrant nightlife at Underground Atlanta. Originally built in the early 20th century, the hotel offers an intimate alternative to the larger chain hotels that dominate the downtown area. The property blends a historic façade with a modernist décor that includes contemporary guest rooms, complimentary Wi-Fi access, iPod docks, a women’s-only floor and rooftop dining at the Terrace on Peachtree restaurant, which serves up flat-iron steaks and pan roasted trout.

Georgian Terrace Hotel

Nestled within the Fox Theatre District in Midtown, the Georgian Terrace Hotel is a Beau-Arts-themed property that is listed on the National Historic Registry. The hotel is within one block of the North Avenue MARTA station and across the street from the Arabian-inspired Fox Theatre, which offers a roster of concerts, plays and classic film screenings. The hotel is also near Georgia Tech University’s Bobby Dodd Stadium and “The Varsity” drive-in restaurant, an Atlanta icon serving up hot dogs, burgers and fries since 1928. The Georgian Terrace Hotel features an ornate columned lobby and a circular 19-story glass atrium, traditionally decorated guest rooms, a roof top pool and patio dining at Livingston’s Restaurant and Bar.

Residence Inn Atlanta Midtown17th Street

The Residence Inn Atlanta Midtown/17th Street offers affordable, family-friendly guest suites in the city’s arts district. The hotel is a stones throw from the Arts Center MARTA station and the Woodruff Arts Center, home of the High Museum of Art, the Alliance Theatre and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Piedmont Park is also nearby, offering sports fields, exercise trails, playgrounds and a resort-style swimming pool. Hotel accommodations consist of one- or two-bedroom guest suites with fully equipped kitchens, complimentary breakfast buffets and evening beer and wine receptions.

The Mansion on Peachtree

Towering 42 stories above the city, the Mansion on Peachtree offers a peaceful refuge in the upscale Buckhead district. The hotel is set back away from the street and within walking distance of the Buckhead MARTA station, restaurants, bars and high-end retail at Lenox Square Mall and its pricier companion, Phipps Plaza. The Mansion on Peachtree is a mixed-use condo and hotel facility that offers contemporary guest rooms with plasma screen TVs mounted behind paintings and bathroom mirrors, frameless marble showers, Bose stereos and skyline views. Amenities include a full-service spa with 14 treatment rooms, English gardens, 60-foot indoor lap pool, 24-hour room service and gourmet dining at Craft restaurant, the brainchild of “Top Chef” judge Tom Colicchio.
