Archery is tens of thousands of years old. Archeologists have discovered arrowheads in Africa said to date back to 25,000 B.C. Today, bow-and-arrow enthusiasts span the globe. Some use archery to hunt wild game. Others consider it a skilled sport. And in Illinois, archers can find a little bit of both by joining a local archers' club or association.

Illinois Archery Association

Archers who join the Illinois Archery Association (il-archery.com) enjoy membership in an organization dedicated to encouraging and promoting organized archery in Illinois. Benefits include bi-monthly issues of "Archery" magazine, opportunities to join indoor and outdoor leagues and access to certified archery instructors. The group coordinates archery activities and participates in regional and national events. Families and archery professionals are encouraged to join.

Chicago Archery

The Chicago Archery (chicagoarchery.org) group offers young archers the chance to learn under the B.E.S.T. Archery Training Method. B.E.S.T. stands for "Biomechanical Efficient Shooting Technique," and, according to the organization's website, the B.E.S.T. method is aimed at developing stronger archers with no injuries. The organization takes part in indoor and outdoor leagues as well.

Kishwaukee Archers

The Kishwaukee Archers (kishwaukeearchers.org) is a family-friendly club headquartered in Sycamore, Illinois. The club offers an indoor shooting range for year-round target practice. It also offers a hunting trail with 28 targets throughout the woods near its clubhouse and practice range. Instructors are also available to help bowhunters learn new skills and techniques.

Lincoln Park Archery Club

The Lincoln Park Archery Club (lincolnparkarcheryclub.org) offers a semi-private club atmosphere to its members, which promotes safer shooting and a less-crowded range. The club participates in tournament shoots with other Chicago Park District archery clubs, focusing on the barebow, freestyle limited and freestyle unlimited shooting styles. New members are always welcome.
