Andrew Carnegie's Impact on America

by Nick Mann, Demand Media

Known for his philanthropy and generous nature, Andrew Carnegie had a profound impact on America. In 1848, young Carnegie and his family emigrated from Scotland to the United States. During his lifetime, he amassed a fortune from the steel industry. The amazing thing about Carnegie was that he gave away most of his money to various causes.

    Steel Industry

Perhaps Carnegie's biggest influence on America involved his hand in the steel industry. In the early 20th century, Carnegie's keen business skills helped him create steel at a very affordable price. As a result, numerous buildings and bridges were constructed across America. This led to an economic boom that created jobs and ultimately led to the expansion of America.

    Libraries

The creation of many public libraries was another of Carnegie's accomplishments. Thanks to his generous donation of $40 million, over 1,600 new public libraries were constructed across America. In turn, this gave many individuals the ability to learn and educate themselves with books that were previously unaccessible.

    Education System

Another area in which Carnegie influenced America was in the education system. He founded the Carnegie Institution, which provided colleges and universities with funding for research. He also donated over 100 libraries to some of those colleges and universities, helping advance America's education system.

    Carnegie Hall

The famous Carnegie Hall in New York City is another one of his contributions. Carnegie Hall is one of the most esteemed music venues in America and is a cultural hub for classical music and other genres. Over the years, it has featured musical acts ranging from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles.
