New Caney, Texas, lies in Montgomery County in the Houston-Sugarland metropolitan area. Although there are plans to build a large amusement park in New Caney in the coming years, thrill-seekers young and old will have to travel a few miles in order to find a theme park. Luckily, there are a few theme parks and water parks within driving distance of New Caney in the greater Houston area and beyond.

    EarthQuest -- New Caney

EarthQuest Resort will be a family friendly theme park, water park and eco-resort, all in one, upon its scheduled opening in 2013. The eco-friendly amusement park will feature sections called Land, Life, Pangea, Sky and Water. Guests will be invited to explore the wonders of our world, according to the EarthQuest website. In addition to the theme park, a dinosaur-themed water park, called Cretaceous Cove, is planned. A resort hotel, EarthQuest Resort Hotel and Tree Houses, will feature green design elements and highlight sustainability.

Pirate's Bay Water Park -- Baytown

Just about an hour's drive from New Caney is the Pirate's Bay Water Park in Baytown, Texas. The pirate-themed water wonderland has a large children's play area, featuring slides and water attractions appropriate for the youngest water lovers. For the older and braver members of your group, there is a surf-simulating ride, a space bowl, several body and tube slides and a lazy river. The park is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and you can purchase day passes or season passes. You may also consider renting a poolside cabana for a party or large family gathering.

    Splashtown -- Houston

About thirty minutes away, a 35-mile drive from New Caney, you will find Splashtown, Houston's largest water park. With a half-million gallon wave pool, a children's activity pool, several body slides and flumes, a family tube ride and lots of other options, it is unlikely any member of your party will be bored at Splashtown. Splashtown's hours vary during the summer, so be sure to check ahead of time for the hours on the day you intend to visit. You can purchase a pass for the day or upgrade to a season pass. In addition to slides and pools, Splashtown features an array of food choices since outside food is not permitted inside the park.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas -- San Antonio

If you're looking for big thrills and big adventure, then drive a little further to San Antonio's Six Flags Over Texas. The park is about 235 miles from New Caney, a three- to four-hour drive. The park is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has rides and attractions for every member of your group. From Bugs Bunny-themed kiddie rides to the Superman Krypton Coaster, you will easily be able to fill an entire day or more at this San Antonio theme park. In addition to rides, there are also many dining, shopping and entertainment options available. Ticket discounts are available if you purchase your tickets online.
