Amarillo Motels

by Cicely A. Richard

Amarillo sits on historic Route 66, once a major gateway to the western United States. The city has nationally recognized motels, as well as Amarillo’s historic Big Texan Steak Ranch and Motel. Amarillo motels may not have as many rooms and amenities as larger hotels, but they offer basic accommodations and amenities for less money. Once a cattle ranch community, Amarillo features attractions such as the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum.

Big Texan Steak Ranch and Motel

Big Texan Steak Ranch and Motel has operated in Amarillo since 1960, serving travelers driving along historic Route 66. The motel resembles a late 1800s western town, featuring wood-framed buildings lining the parking lot. Visitors know that they’ve reached their destination when they see the motel’s big cowboy welcoming them. It offers 24-hour service, laundry facilities, free limo service, truck parking and a Texas-shaped swimming pool. All rooms have basic cable; select rooms have whirlpool tubs. The motel also provides 20 stalls for horse owners, as well as a 60-foot pen and gated exercise area. The ranch house resembles a saloon and serves steak on its lunch and dinner menus. The restaurant also provides a buffet-style breakfast.

Super 8 Motels

Amarillo has three Super 8 Motel locations -- Super 8 Amarillo Central, Super 8 Amarillo West and Super 8 Amarillo on Lakeside Drive. All locations, with the exception of Amarillo West, allow pets for a nightly fee applicable for each pet. Other standard amenities include free continental breakfasts and 24-hour coffee, free Internet access, and parking spacing for trucks and buses. Guest rooms have cable television, and the hotel provides microwaves and refrigerators. Super 8 Amarillo West offers more amenities than the others, which consist of an indoor heated pool, a 24-hour business center, a meeting room and free passes to Gold’s Gym.

Motel 6 Locations

Motel 6 locations in Amarillo include Motel 6-East on I-40 at Grand Street and Motel 6-Airport on I-40 at Eastern Street. The motels offer parallel amenities that consist of free morning coffee, laundry facilities, outdoor pools and truck parking. Both locations are approximately five miles from the airport, let kids stay for free and allow pets for a daily fee. Pet owners must leash pets in public area and not leave them in the room. If hotel staff finds pets alone in the room, they will ask the owners to leave. Guest rooms offer wireless Internet for a nominal fee. Select rooms at Motel 6 Amarillo-Airport have microwaves and refrigerators.
