To give your dollhouse roof a weathered and rustic appearance, the plastic roof tiles need roughing up. Craft stores typically sell plastic roof tiles for dollhouses, yet the miniature roofing material often lacks the character to make a miniature house appear almost lifelike. If you want your dollhouse to have that lived-in look, age the roof tiles after you attach the tiles to the dollhouse. Handle the materials gently when aging the tiles so as not to loosen the roof.

Items you will need

  • Sandpaper
  • Gesso
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint
Step 1

Paint a thin layer of gesso over the plastic roof tiles after affixing the tiles to the roof of the dollhouse. Allow to dry. Gesso is a primer-like material available at craft stores.

Step 2

Sand the tiles gently with the sandpaper. This gives the tiles a weathered look.

Step 3

Dab a tiny bit of paint on the tiles, in random areas, to provide accent color, using a dry brush. Select a paint that complements the tile, such as a darker shade of the original roof tile.
