'50s Actress Halloween Costumes

by Christi Aldridge

Go retro for a glamorous Halloween costume idea. The '50s are full of beautiful and noteworthy actresses who stood out in their own way. These women would be wonderful inspiration for an inventive and unforgettable Halloween costume that will have suitors swooning on Halloween night. Go back to the elegance of a simpler time by dressing as a '50s bombshell, gamine or comedian.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is perhaps the most well-known sex symbol of the last century. Her innocence coupled with her sexuality and beauty made her a standout and an easy look to copy. Don a platinum short wig and some red lipstick. Borrow Monroe's look by putting on a dress that looks like her famous one from "The Seven Year Itch," or a pink strapless dress reminiscent of her "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" look. Her signature look was figure-hugging sheaths that showed plenty of buxom cleavage, high heels and tousled, sexy hair. Add a breathy voice to complete the Monroe persona.

Lucille Ball

Lucille Ball, star of the legendary sitcom "I Love Lucy," was a fiery redhead with a penchant for physical comedy. Emulate Ball's look by wearing a red, curly wig with bangs and a bun, or fixing your own hair to resemble Ball's iconic look. Ball wore bright red lipstick and false eyelashes, and she usually wore a cotton dress that buttoned up and had a collar. She had a dress with polka dots and some with a checkered pattern. Add an apron for a housewife look for your Ball costume. Better yet, grab a friend to dress as Ethel for maximum hilarity.

Bettie Page

Bettie Page was a pin-up model and actress who had a distinctive look. Her long dark hair punctuated by straight-across bangs was her trademark. To look like Page, you must have the hairdo. To dress like Page, you must not be shy. Page posed in many bikinis and lingerie shoots, frequently wearing a leopard bikini or black lingerie and stockings. Try to find a vintage-style swimsuit to wear for your costume, or even a Tarzan and Jane type of costume, which is an homage to Page's jungle photo shoots. Page had dark black eyebrows and sported red lipstick.

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn, a beloved actress that captured America's hearts, was a sweet and beautiful gamine woman. Copy Hepburn's famous look from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by wearing a simple black dress, upswept hair, long black gloves, a tiara, chunky jewelry and carrying a long cigarette holder. Hepburn was bewitching in "Roman Holiday" as Princess Ann. Copy Princess Ann's casual look by wearing a long skirt, button-up shirt, scarf tied around the neck and casual hairstyle, or her princess look by wearing a gorgeous tiara and diamond necklace along with an elegant evening dress.
